Erin Brockovich to tackle Australia

Legendary whistle-blower Erin Brockovich, whose exploits became the subject of a hit Hollywood movie, warns she is no “flash in the pan”.

Her personal story documented in the film Erin Brockovich won an Oscar for superstar Julia Roberts in the title role and, six years later, Brockovich continues life in the spotlight.

“I think in some people’s minds I was going to be a flash in the pan, so it would be a year or maybe two and I was gone,” Brockovich said today ahead of a visit to Australia. “As I noticed four, five and six years passing I am still doing the same thing. I am out there, I am in the news,” she said from California.

Brockovich will make her first trip to Australia in March as special guest of a climate change coalition dinner being held in Sydney.

“I am going to be in Australia in March speaking with a group and hopefully you will see me a few more times this year,” she admitted. “I have heard wonderful things about Australia and am really looking forward to the trip.”

Whether it’s lecturing, hosting or investigating, Brockovich says her drive to succeed comes from her passion to help those in need. Premiering in Australia on January 14 Brockovich hosts real-life crime program Final Justice, and admits that while she has been offered many television roles in the past she is selective about what she accepts.

“There have been approaches for a lot of things from reality shows to hosting, but they weren’t the right fit,” she said. “If this was about 15 minutes of fame I truly don’t care about that. “If it’s something that fits with the integrity of my work … about public health and safety … I would never want to do a show that would taint my integrity.”

Final Justice portrays the dramatic stories of women who have faced a major life crisis – from women’s children being raped and murdered, to women being spied on by their neighbours – and all seek justice. Just like Brockovich did when she took on a large corporation to protect the small US town of Hinkley and helped the plaintiffs win $US333 million ($425 million) in damages. It was one of the largest class-action lawsuits in history.

Brockovich hopes Final Justice educates viewers. “It is women, men, children, people standing up to the plate to make a difference and you watch them go through their own suffering, yet rise from those ashes,” she said. “I find that most admirable and inspiring.”
